Standardization in action: Did you know that the SQL language is based on international standards?
Nowadays, it is hard to imagine a company that does not have
a database to manage its activities. Indeed, many processes related to the
operation of a company use relational databases, whether this is to manage
customers, track orders, or for any other activity requiring the storage and
retrieval of data.
However, the technical specifications underlying the
operation of database management systems are relatively unknown. These
specifications are actually derived from the ISO/IEC 9075 Information
technology - Database languages - SQL series of international standards, as
well as the following two complementary series of standards:
- ISO/IEC 19075 Information technology - Guidance for the
use of database language SQL, which describes the justification and use of
certain functions of SQL;
- ISO/IEC 13249 Information technology - Database languages
- SQL multimedia and application packages, which defines a number of generic
data types used in multimedia and application domains in order to make them
usable in databases.
The video below presents these three series of standards,
explains how they can be consulted, and how to become a national
standardization delegate in Luxembourg.
