Release of the 2020 National Technical Standardization report on the IoT

ILNAS is proud to announce the release of its 2020 National Technical Standardization report on the IoT (Internet of Things). It is a follow-up to the White Paper on the IoT published in 2018 with the support of the Ministry of the Economy.

The IoT has emerged in recent years as a prominent paradigm for data collection and analytics on one hand, and large-scale, internet-enabled actuation on our physical environment on the other. It continues to evolve, fostering the convergence of different ICT domains, such as telecommunications and the Cloud, and encouraging the development of new ICT concepts, such as edge and fog computing. It also finds applications in all aspects of society, touching upon verticals as diverse as smart homes, connected wearables, industrial automation, energy management and even agriculture. Thus, it poses extreme challenges, notably in terms of interoperability, security and privacy, making the need for technical standardization all the more pressing and pertinent.

In this context, this new technical report first revisits the technical landscape of the IoT, with a particular focus on the value of data, and the need for adequate levels of security and privacy. It then gives examples of some national stakeholder IoT use cases, specifically in the areas of satellite-based connectivity supporting IoT and Smart mobility. Finally, it paints an updated picture of the IoT technical standardization landscape, and specifically on the involvement of Luxembourg within it.

With this publication, in line with the recent Luxembourg standardization strategy 2020-2030, ILNAS continues to inform and raise the awareness of the Luxembourgish market, notably on technical standardization opportunities and national activities in one of the Smart ICT technologies targeted by the national Policy on ICT technical standardization 2020-2025. The IoT will also be prominent in the new MTECH Master’s program, a degree which will allow ICT professionals to grasp the role of technical standardization in order to better innovate in the constantly evolving Smart Secure ICT domain.

Interested in developing technical standards?

Luxembourg is already an active participant in IoT technical standardization via its ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 national mirror committee, currently composed of 18 national delegates. ILNAS provides the possibility of becoming a national delegate within one or more technical committees free-of-charge to anybody with an interest in participating in technical standards development.

To do so, one only needs to fill out a registration request form, and send it by e-mail to the address normalisation@ilnas.etat.lu.
