CITIZEN AI: Raising AI to Benefit Business and Society

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere, growing in its reach throughout society. Businesses need to capitalize on AI’s potential to stay in the game. As AI evolves, it will become our partner, with unprecedented impact on the way people work and live.

“In 2018, Accenture published a new edition of Technology Vision, our annual forecast of the technology trends set to unfold in the business world. Our research includes interviews and a global survey of business leaders and experts in different industries to find out which technological trends, in their eyes, will play an important role in the next three to five years,” explains Thomas Musiolik, Technology Lead at Accenture Luxembourg.Deploying AI has moved beyond just training it to perform a given task. It’s about “raising” it to act as a responsible and productive member of society.”

The research reveals that most business executives believe AI will have a major impact on the evolution of the business. It will be at the origin of multiple transformations at the level of organizations and industries.

- 4/5 executives (81%) agree that within the next two years, AI will work next to humans in their organizations, as a co-worker, collaborator and trusted advisor.

- 72% of executives report that their organizations seek to gain customer trust and confidence by being transparent in their AI-based decisions and actions.

As AI expands further into society, accountability around raising responsible and explainable AI will also grow.

Raising responsible AI means addressing many of the same challenges faced in human training and growth. Companies can look at their human development milestones for guidance. For example, people learn how to learn. They then rationalize or explain their thoughts and actions, and eventually accept responsibility for their decisions.

Many companies still treat AI as a software program or tool. No one would expect a tool to “act” responsibly, explain its decisions, or work well with others. But with AI systems making decisions that affect people, companies must teach AI to do all of these things and more.

After all, with great power comes great responsibility. We call it “Citizen AI”.
